STRATEGIC CONSULTING

A testament to his entrepreneurial spirit, Mr. Bednar launched Joe Bednar Consulting in 2006. His most recent clients have included:

  • Hitviews, a marketplace pairing the most popular online video stars with brands who want to reach the stars’ loyal audiences

  • A global media company licensing media & entertainment information to over 4,000 customers in 40 countries

  • SpiralFrog, a major distributor of ad-supported, downloadable music; SpiralFrog has since changed their business model and is now doing business as MyMojo.com

  • Telkonet, a public company producing power line communications (PLC) technology which enables IP communications over a building’s internal electrical wiring

Hitviews, in its startup phase, needed to establish a strong B2B brand and marketing foundation. After laying original branding architecture, he launched an interactive web presence. The website he built allowed visitors to subscribe to news feeds, create accounts, and browse videos from the company's large base of online video stars. Mr. Bednar also participated in business development efforts with ABC, FOX, ION Television, MTV Networks, Sony, The Weinstein Company, and TiVo.

Mr. Bednar filled the role of Director, Product Marketing for the Entertainment Information business unit of a global media company. This client was a highly specialized division of a global media corporation with holdings in newspaper, television stations, cable networks, and online businesses. Mr. Bednar led the marketing of media & entertainment data and solutions to over 4,000 customers in 40 countries. He oversaw all product brands in 8 market segments.

SpiralFrog in 2008 was a pioneer in the ad-supported music download industry. The company offered FREE music downloads to consumers in exchange for online ad exposure. Mr. Bednar was invited by senior executives to document and present technical issues with both their business model and their B2C website. The resulting critique is available for download here.

Telkonet joined forces in 2006 with national ISP EarthLink to trial their PLC technology in multi-dwelling unit (MDU) communities in the Washington, DC metro area. Having worked with Telkonet technology in the past, Mr. Bednar consulted EarthLink on end-user adoption in these newly wired communities. He developed an overall consumer marketing plan within a limited trial budget. He reviewed all existing EarthLink marketing collateral, provided recommendations for new MDU-specific collateral, designed unique pieces himself, and calculated the projected consumption schedule. During waves of campaigning, Mr. Bednar provided on-site training and client services management at serviced communities.

EFFECTIVE MARKETING DIRECTION

Prior to operating his own consultancy, Mr. Bednar was employed as Director of Marketing with two media distribution businesses. He saw DAVE Networks through three distinct cycles of business model evolution: software/hardware platform, destination portal, and Web software toolset. In the second cycle as “DAVE-dot-TV” (DAVE.TV), the company launched an online Flash-based destination portal at www.dave.tv. A hybrid collection of both video sharing and social networking features, akin to “YouTube.com meets MySpace.com,” the portal’s primary mission was to build a valuable user base through user interaction with professional content, user-generated content, and social networking tools (i.e., video sharing, profiles, and messaging).

Mr. Bednar managed a pipeline of over 300 content publishers with whom he developed and executed distribution contracts, including Eye Music Network, Here! Networks, and Union. He implemented and educated his client on sales and collaboration software packages Salesforce.com and Microsoft SharePoint. He also marketed the new DAVE.TV business model at CES, Digital Hollywood and NCTA tradeshows.

Given the technical success of the DAVE.TV platform, the company’s third cycle was licensing the modular software behind www.dave.tv. Mr. Bednar was instrumental in building this licensing business with such clients as MGM, CBS, Oxygen, Endemol, Fremantle, and XYIENCE Energy Drinks. Mr. Bednar recommended rebranding the company again as “DAVE Networks.” After refining core competencies, including building a new corporate website, he translated over 300 software modules (APIs) into common functional language for the marketplace.

Prior to DAVE Networks, after a three-month consultancy with competitive ISP Noment Networks, Mr. Bednar was hired as Director of Marketing.  He was instrumental in building the company from a small Atlanta-based start-up ISP to a nationwide competitive provider of cable TV, satellite TV, high-speed Internet, and telephone services to apartment communities. Simultaneously leading all B2B corporate and B2C subscriber marketing efforts, he grew the company to over 130 communities in 24 states. He drove move-in capture rates as high as 91% more than doubled subscriber penetration.

After three years of operating as Noment Networks, Mr. Bednar helped the company through a successful merger and rebranded the resultant company as Fusion Broadband. He also designed and managed the corporate website, developed all collateral (i.e., contest promotions, on-site events, trade show presence, brochures, move-in kits, door hangers, signage, banners, direct mail, and property newsletter inserts), and represented the company in speaking engagements at key conferences and trade shows. Fusion Broadband is now Pavlov Media.

SOLID FOUNDATION

Mr. Bednar began his consulting career as a Media & Entertainment e-business Consultant for IBM and an Advanced Media & Computing Specialist for AT&T while in college.

With seven years of education from Syracuse University, Mr. Bednar holds an MBA from the Whitman School of Management, a Master’s of Science in Media Management from the acclaimed S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, and a BFA in Film Production from the College of Visual & Performing Arts. His thesis film won a Student Emmy Award.

This broad range of experiences empowers Mr. Bednar to make critical impact to a company’s development – even if he has to roll up his own creative sleeves, ditch the tie, and get dirty.
